Relief From Depression, Stress & Anxiety
Depression is often a result of lamenting or regretting things that have occurred or not occurred in our past. Depression can also be caused by unresolved loss or grief. Anxiety on the other hand, will often be triggered by our fear about what may or may not happen in the future. And stress often comes from trying to control anything that is external, as in some person, place, thing or institution that exist outside ourselves. The only thing we ever have control over is our thoughts. Contrary to what many people say, they don’t think us, we think them. And that only happens in the moment, in the present, in the NOW. One of my favorite and most inspiring examples of this is from Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning.
Viktor Frankl, “Everything you have in life can be taken from you except one thing. Your freedom to choose how you will respond to the situation. This is what will determine the quality of the life we’ve lived. Not whether we’ve been rich or poor, famous or unknown, healthy or suffering. What determines our quality of life is how we relate to these realities, what kind of meaning we assign to them, what kind of attitude we cling to about them. What state of mind we allow them to trigger. The last of our human freedoms is the ability to choose our attitude in any given set of circumstances.”
Our work together will be to develop practical tools based on this philosophy, therefore creating relief and freedom from the bondage of depression, stress and anxiety. With mindful practice, this is not only achievable, but will liberate you into a new found energy and creativity.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change (anything outside myself), the courage to change the things I can (my thinking and perception) and the wisdom to know the difference.
